B.J. Penn Calls Jon Fitch Fight “Icing On The Cake”
Of most interest to me were Penn's discussion of training with legendary boxing coach Floyd Mayweather, Sr. and former rival as well former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes. If you look at what Penn will need to defeat Fitch, it's superior boxing (specifically, angles, movement, 3 or four punch combinations and a steady jab) as well as takedown defense against a wide swathe of fence and non-fence attacks.
Fitch’s trainer and founder of Guerilla Jiu-Jitsu, Dave Camarillo, has trained extensively with Penn and will likely have some idea how the Hawaiian’s preferences or strengths. But bringing in these two men - Mayweather and Hughes - adds precisely the sort of wrinkles to Penn’s game that he’ll need to keep Fitch off balance.
All of that being said, I still fundamentally think this is a fight that will decided on physical power and strength. Unless Penn can do to Fitch what Frankie Edgar did to Penn, he'll have to go strength for strength against an ostensibly much bigger Fitch. I'm not sure that is in Penn's favor.
