UFC On Versus 3 To Air In 3D
The UFC announced today via press release that UFC on Versus 3 will air in 3D. The event will air on Thursday, March 3rd at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Kentucky and is headlined by Diego Sanchez vs. Martin Kampmann. This is the first UFC event ever in three dimensions.
The broadcasters for this event, which airs on the Versus channel, will by play-by-play man Todd Harris and UFC featherweight Kenny Florian.
According to the release, several 3D cameras will be placed around the Octagon with “new camera angles not usually seen during previous UFC 2D telecasts.” To get 3D, you’ll need a 3D capable television along with Comcast’s 24-hour, Next Generation Xfinity 3D channel.
UFC President said, “We’re really excited to start broadcasting UFC events in 3D...UFC is ahead of the curve when it comes to introducing new technology and we think UFC fans will really enjoy seeing fights in 3D.”
I’ve seen kickboxing in 3D and it was a trippy experience. I’ve sat cageside for fights, and the 3D experience wasn’t like that at all. Frankly, I’m not sure I enjoy 3D technology yet as it’s more of exaggerated 2D then some sort of new viewing experience that brings you inside or closer to the action. It’s not more life-like.
It’s also fair to point out that the UFC obviously has to keep up with the Jones’, but it’s not at clear 3D technology is the next wave of innovation ready to be accepted by American families in the way high definition was. The benefits are inconclusive and the cost is high. Besides, is anyone really suffering with crisp, high definition?
