Kevin James To Star In MMA Movie As Former Penn State Wrestler
God bless Kevin James. A die-hard MMA fan, superb stand-up comic and a man who makes painfully bad movies. Even though the plot of his next movie is based in the world of mixed martial arts, I’m not expecting a change in the trajectory of his cinematic career.
There’s a new twist, however, that follows real line plot lines. James’ character, assumed to be a UFC fighter, will have had a background as an NCAA Division I wrestler. To wit:
According to a message posted at the Facebook page of Worldwide Sport Supply-Wrestling Wednesday afternoon, "We just received a call from Columbia Pictures. They are buying an early 1990s Penn State replica singlet for an Adam Sandler-produced movie called Here Comes the BOOM starring Kevin James. Pretty cool."
A later post said, "I guess James is a former PSU wrestler that turns to MMA to help pay bills 20 yrs later!"
Worldwide Sport Supply-Wrestling also disclosed that two singlets were shipped -- "XL and XXL for sizing."
Assuming that James will put on the old-school Nittany Lion uniform, it apparently won't be the first time he's worn a singlet. According to his Wikipedia biography, James wrestled at Ward Melville High School in Stony Brook, N.Y. before graduating in 1983.
I’m not going to add anything here except that if the movie is terrible MMA fans will say it’s great because it’s about MMA. But if it’s good, I’ll post a retraction here.
I can’t get too excited. The title of the movie shares the same name as a P.O.D. song, which tells me that’s going to be the movie’s theme music.
