At The Arnold Classic 2011, Schwarzenegger Explains Love Of MMA
The former Governor of California, bodybuilding great and Hollywood actor Arnold Schwarzenegger took a few moments at the Arnold Classic 2011, a bodybuilding and sports expo he helped create, to answer questions about his views on mixed martial arts. Showtime caught up with Schwarzenegger at the Strikeforce: Feijao vs. Henderson weigh-ins.
The governor said he enjoys watching fights, but who knows if he actually does? Interestingly, Schwarzenegger also said he enjoys MMA because it’s a healthy combination of sports and show business, which is exactly correct. He noted the fans love the action of the fights, but get involved with the various colorful personalities.
The governor also said he watches all the fights that are produced.
Schwarzenegger also made sure to underscore the ties between MMA and the rest of the Arnold Classic: fitness and health. He called health “a means to an end”.
It wasn't a direct endorsement of any one product or organization, but a general stamp of approval from the governor of California is certainly not a bad thing. It also wasn't as full-throated of an endorsement as I would've liked, but just having Strikeforce as part of the expo and showing a commitment to MMA is a laudable thing.
