VIDEO: UFC Primetime: St. Pierre Vs. Shields Episode 1
I've been behind on posting this, but it's worth a gander. This is the first installment on the fifth edition of this series. Each series runs three episodes, the first of which this time out did so at midnight last Wednesday. My sense about this episode was that it was generally dull, but that challenger Jake Shields come off well. Georges St. Pierre appears to be over exposed and incapable of moving beyond packaged message points. A show like this ordinarily does well to help develop character, but this is his third appearance. What more can UFC Primetime possibly add at this point?
The ratings for this event affirm my suspicions. MMA Junkie reports:
Wednesday night’s debut of “UFC Primetime: St-Pierre vs. Shields,” which previews the UFC 129 main event on April 30 between current UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre and top contender Jake Shields, drew 610,000 viewers to Spike TV.
Bloody Elbow’s Mike Fagan adds context:
The debut for Quinton Jackson and Rashad Evans drew 1.2 million viewers, while GSP's last time on the show with Dan Hardy drew an even million.
There’s the issue of timeslot in this case. Previous episodes have aired at 10 p.m. ET, 11 p.m. and even earlier. Midnight, along will little promotional push leading into the debut, didn’t help matters.
