Tachi Palace Fights often puts together unheralded, excellent fights for several key reasons: they give young prospects the opportunity to gain important experience, feature top-level flyweight bouts and offer once-established contenders a chance at redemption for a return to bigger shows. This event exemplified TPF's strength. We witnessed Efrain Escudero battle Fabricio Camoes and an excellent flyweight battle (video above) between former WEC bantamweight contender Ian McCall and Dustin Ortiz.
The flyweight division, such as it exists, has enormous distance to cover before it’s even at the level of other new divisions like feather and bantamweights. Still, what I admire most about flyweight fights is the volume of offensive output. I don’t know if they generally lack defensive skills or if their speed and athleticism allows them to unload higher than normal levels of offensive maneuvers. Either way, the dynamic nature of flyweight fights is something to behold.
