UFC CEO Dana White came onto the Spike broadcast of the UFC 131: Rampage vs Hamill event to announce that former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar underwent surgery yesterday to have a foot of colon removed. White said he hopes Lesnar will return to action early in 2012.
UFC 131: Brock Lesnar Receives Surgery, Expected To Return Early 2012
Lesnar was diagnosed with diverticulitis in early 2010 and sat out several months before defending his UFC title against Shane Carwin at UFC 116. He went on to lose the UFC heavyweight belt to Cain Velasquez at UFC 121. After Velasquez underwent surgery for a torn rotator cuff, Lesnar maintained his station as the focus of the UFC's heavyweight division.
Lesnar coached the current season of The Ultimate Fighter which was planned to set up a title-eliminator bout between Lesnar and #1 contender Junior dos Santos. The re-emergence of Lesnar’s diverticulitis a few weeks ago forced him out of that bout. Shane Carwin had to step in against dos Santos.
The spot also pitched Lesnar’s new autobiography “Deathclutch.”
