Gary Shaw Gives Kimbo Slice Update, Offers To Promote Nick Diaz
Failed MMA promoter and justifiably-maligned boxing promoter Gary Shaw recently spoke to Fight Hub TV. The former promoter of Elite XC and Nick Diaz says he'd be willing to promote the current Strikeforce middleweight champ in his proposed boxing plans, but says Diaz must face relevant competition to make the effort worthwhile. He openly states, much as Brent Brookhouse has said, neither Jeff Lacy nor Fernando Vargas are relevant boxers. Given how UFC President Dana White has suggested he's likely going to try and talk Diaz out of boxing as well as his bad blood with Shaw I doubt Shaw will actually ever promote Diaz in boxing endeavors.
Shaw also says Slice is currently at home in Florida doing whatever he does there. He says he tried to get Slice to take a boxing fight and even put him in a training camp in southern California, but that it ultimately didn’t pan out. Shaw points to complacency due to financial gain as the reason for Slice’s lack of motivation.
For all of Shaw’s faults (consult Steve Kim for that), he does promote legit boxers in legit bouts. He’s right about what Diaz needs as well as what ails Slice. Diaz is over committed and willing to take the wrong path to make boxing happen; Slice is under committed and willing to avoid the entire enterprise given the rigors. That Shaw seems so reasonable here should tell you how unreasonable the other parties are being here.
