Strikeforce Overeem Vs. Werdum Results: Nah-Shon Burrell Dominates Joe Ray For Two Of Three Rounds

The second fight of the night and of the HDNet broadcast at Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum is Nah-Shon Burrell (179) vs. Joe Ray (180). This is a catchweight bout of 180lbs. The referee in change is Don Turnage.

ROUND 1 - Both fighters open orthodox and trade short punches before Burrell lands a double leg slam off of the fence, now in half guard. Ray attempts a triangle from his back, but can’t get it. Now he’s shopping for a leg lock on Burrell, but he defends. Ray continuously hunting for submissions now trying for a kimura, but Burrell appears to be defending. Ray nearly gets it and then tries to transition to an armbar, but still can’t get it. Burrell moves to side control, but it’s loose and Ray recaptures half guard. Ray nearly lands an armbar, but Burrell escapes and delivers a few hammer fists. Ray is able to stand and is trying to avoid the takedown with a standing kimura, which he uses to transition to a belly-down armbar, but amazingly Burrell rotates over the top and escapes. Now working in Ray’s guard.

ROUND 2 - Left hook lands for Burrell to open the round. Outside leg kick response from Ray. Right hand lead lands hard for Burrell as does the left hook, then the double leg. Ray is in half guard looking for the kimura, rolls back down and now looking for a leg lock. Now Burrell is in side control, going from side to side along with a few hammerfists for good measure. Ray uses a leg ride to stand and nearly lands a single leg dump, but Burrell bases out and lands on top. A few more submission attempts to close out the round, this time with Burrell being much more dominant.

ROUND 3 - Burrell showing more movement and energy to start the round. Hard right hand from Burrell lands, plus a middle kick. Jab, reposition, left hook for Burrell lands. Left hook now for Burrell and another to the body. Ray overcommits on a punch and Burrell drives him to the mat. Ray uses an underhook to stand and the two clinch against the fence. Ray attempts an bodylock trip, but Burrell bases out and takes the top. Ray attempting a guillotine, but Burrell escapes, gets behind Ray and uses double underhooks once they stand to drive him back to the floor. After little ground and pound, the fighters stand.
