Strikeforce Overeem Vs. Werdum Results: Daniel Cormier Pummels Jeff Monson

The second bout of the night of Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum and airing on Showtime is Daniel Cormier vs. Jeff Monson. This is a heavyweight fight, meaning both fighters are between 206lbs and 265lbs. Cormier is a former two-time Olympian while Monson is a former UFC heavyweight title contender. The referee in charge of the action is Leon Roberts.

ROUND 1 - Monson standing southpaw, Cormier orthodox. Cormier lands a right off of Monson’s missed left. Now a right for Cormier as Monson ducks. They clinch now and Cormier is pressing him into the fence. Monson is cut over the top of his head. Right hand and uppercut for Cormier find the mark. Right straight, left hook lands for Cormier. Now a middle kick lands. Jab now for Monson. Left hook for Cormier now and then an overhand right. Several punches now find the mark for Cormier as he reacts to Monson’s punches.

ROUND 2 - Now both fighters standing orthodox. Cormier showing a nice variety of high and low kicks. Monson misses with an overhand right, falls to the ground but Cormier makes him stand. Monson with a 50/50 grip against the fence, but Cormier is pressing him. Nice jab for Monson now. Right hand straight and an uppercut now for Cormier. Cormier is getting tagged with jab, but landing all sorts of right straights and left hooks. Cormier ripping shots to the body plus kicks to the middle. Cormier partially trips Monson, but Monson stands and they resume action in the center of the cage.

ROUND 3 - High kicks from both sides from Cormier to open the round. Cormier ducks under a punch, briefly takes Monson’s back and then separates. Hard, stiff right hand from Cormier plus a gigantic left clearly hurts Monson. Two more lefts now have Monson literally running. Monson attempts a takedown, but is easily shrugged to the floor. Referee Roberts forces him to stand. Hard outside leg kick and a right hand drop Monson to the mat, but Cormier stands back and Monson stands. Cormier attempted a single, but can’t get it and drives Monson into the fence. Cormier turns over, trips and throws Monson to the mat. Now a leg kick from Monson. Monson back to southpaw.
