Marco Simoncelli, MotoGP Rider, Killed At Malaysian Grand Prix

The horrific week in the motorsports world continues.

MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli, who was known for his exciting style on the world’s top bike circuit, was killed in Sunday’s Malaysian Grand Prix event. The rest of the race was then canceled.

Simoncelli is the third racer to die in the last week. Last Sunday, both Indianapolis 500 champion Dan Wheldon and off-road champ Rick Huseman were killed (though Huseman died in a plane crash, not a racing event).

The video of Simoncelli’s death is, quite frankly, very upsetting and disturbing. We advise extreme discretion before deciding whether you watch it. Simoncelli’s helmet was knocked off in the collision with riders Valentino Rossi and Colin Edwards.

Simoncelli was a bright spot in MotoGP. He had yet to win, but had a career-high second-place finish in the previous race at Australia.

He had recently vowed to change his aggressive racing style, which had seen him get caught in his share of accidents.
