Remember a couple years ago when it seemed like drivers were constantly complaining about Goodyear’s race tires? (We’re looking at you, Tony Stewart.)
Goodyear Extends Agreement With NASCAR Through 2017
Well, you don’t hear much about how Goodyear stinks these days. The company did what NASCAR and the drivers wanted: Build longer-lasting, durable tires that could handle the load of the new model Cup car (formerly called the COT).
So it comes as no surprise that Goodyear and NASCAR announced Monday an extension of their relationship for the next five seasons, through 2017.
“The level of commitment from Goodyear over the years is incomparable among all levels of auto sports,” crew chief Chad Knaus said in a statement. “Goodyear is always here, talking to the competitors, making sure their product performs how we need it to. The way their engineers work and deal with the teams, it shows why they have succeeded in this sport for so long.
“Goodyear’s tires are very consistent and they are very safe. That’s what I focus on, from a crew chief or team standpoint, is the consistency of the tires.”
The one complaint about the tires lately is from the Department of Be Careful What You Wish For.
When drivers griped about a lack of durability, Goodyear focused on making a more conservative tire that wouldn’t wear out as quickly.
So these days, tires aren’t as big of an issue and teams can easily take two tires (or even no tires) at some tracks – and that helps lead to fuel-mileage races.
Anyway, though, Goodyear is sticking around – and not going anywhere for awhile.
