Trevor Bayne Receives Treatment For Serious Insect Bite

Trevor Bayne remains at a North Carolina hospital receiving treatment for a serious insect bite after checking himself in early Sunday morning, though it’s not yet determined what kind of insect bit the Daytona 500 winner.

UPDATE: Bayne was released from the hospital on Sunday evening and is cleared to resume all racing activities beginning this weekend at Talladega.

Bayne’s public relations representative Corey Wynn told SB Nation that Bayne found a bite on his left elbow early last week, and it swelled up as the Texas race weekend approached.

“It looked like he had two elbows,” Wynn said.

The swelling had gone down a bit when Bayne woke up Thursday morning, but there was a rash and lumps on his arm. He visited the infield care center at Texas, where doctors circled the rash area to see if it would expand.

The area of concern had expanded the next day, so he was placed on antibiotics.

Wynn said he could tell Bayne was still affected by the bite, though, and the 20-year-old checked into a hospital after landing in North Carolina at approximately 2 a.m. Sunday.

Wynn said the driver is in “good spirits” and would likely have more information about his bite – whether it was a tick or a spider, for instance – later Sunday.

After finishing 17th in Saturday night’s Sprint Cup race, Bayne tweeted early Sunday morning:

@Tbayne21: Not sure if its a spider bite or a tick bite.. But either way I’m in a hospital bed with a needle in my arm! #nobueno
