Kimi Raikkonen To NASCAR: Former F1 Champ To Drive For Kyle Busch Motorsports

The “Iceman” Cometh: Kimi Raikkonen, the ex-Formula One champion, is really coming to NASCAR – and no, Foster Gillett isn’t involved after all.

Raikkonen announced Saturday his NASCAR affiliation will be with Kyle Busch Motorsports, where he will run a limited schedule for the Camping World Truck Series team beginning with the May 20 race at Charlotte.

It’s obviously a huge development for NASCAR, with Raikkonen still being a major figure on the international motorsports stage.

In a statement, Busch said he was “honored” that Raikkonen chose to start his NASCAR career with KBM.

“Adding one of the most talented drivers in the world is a continuation of building a team of proven winners and champions at KBM,” Busch said. “I look forward to assisting in Kimi’s transition to NASCAR as both an owner and teammate.”

The team isn’t releasing the full details of Raikkonen’s schedule just yet, but it’s safe to say wherever the 2007 F1 champ goes, he’ll attract attention.

“Kyle is one of the best in NASCAR, and being able to draw on his knowledge will be a valuable asset as I make my transition to a new form of racing,” Raikkonen said in a statement. “He has put together an experienced team that builds fast race trucks. I look forward to being a part of a team that has proven to be a winner on and off the race track.”

Raikkonen had initially been rumored to be forming his own team with the help of NASCAR pariah Gillett, but that turned out to be false. Currently, the driver competes on the World Rally Car circuit.
