Why Doesn’t Dale Earnhardt Jr. Get Into Controversies With Other Drivers?

Dale Earnhardt Jr. said there’s a good reason fans don’t see him get into arguments and controversies like the one Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick found themselves in at Darlington on Saturday night.

Earnhardt Jr. hasn’t been running well enough to be getting caught up in that kind of situation, he said Tuesday at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

“If I ran up front all the time, sure, I’d be in those share of those mix-ups,” he said. “But it’s hard to start a fight when you’re on the defense all the time and when your car ain’t running good enough. (Then) you just look like an idiot running over people.”

Asked to recall some notable arguments with other drivers, Earnhardt Jr. remembered an incident with Robby Gordon at Bristol several years ago.

But for the most part, he said, “It’s just a waste of time to do all that.”

“When you get mad, you just explode and you’re gonna do things,” he said. “But you always go home and you go, ‘Man...’”

The bottom line is, Earnhardt Jr. said, “I’ve been needing to get my ass in gear and get my car running better here lately.”

“I ain’t really had my opportunities to be really up front in the mix,” he added.
