Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne has been out of the Mayo Clinic for a week, but that doesn’t mean Roush Fenway Racing feels he’s quite ready to return to the track after Bayne’s weeks-long illness.
Trevor Bayne Illness Update: Driver Will Miss Dover, Eyes Return At NASCAR All-Star Race
Roush Fenway said Wednesday afternoon that it will hold Bayne out of this weekend’s Nationwide Series race at Dover. Bayne is tentatively expected to return to NASCAR in next weekend’s All-Star Race at Charlotte and the Nationwide event at Iowa the following day.
“Trevor’s symptoms have subsided and we are very encouraged by his progress,” Roush Fenway president Steve Newmark said. “Still, we are going to exercise and element of caution with his return to the track and keep him out of competition for at least another week.”
Kevin Swindell, the back-to-back Chili Bowl winner, will drive the No. 16 car in Bayne’s place. Chris Buescher had raced the car for the last two weeks, but Buescher has an ARCA Series conflict this weekend.
Bayne was admitted to the Mayo Clinic prior to the Richmond race because of what were believed to be lingering symptoms from an insect bite. But doctors later said Bayne’s symptoms – which included nausea, fatigue and blurred vision – were unrelated to the bite.
The 20-year-old became the youngest Daytona 500 winner in history by way of his shocking upset in February. His Sprint Cup Series team, Wood Brothers Racing, is only fielding a partial schedule this season – but Bayne was slated to drive the full Nationwide schedule and run for the title.
