Mark Martin Hints 2012 Plans Likely To Include Driving, Not Team Ownership

Mark Martin hinted this week that his 2012 NASCAR plans will likely include driving, but not team ownership. The current Hendrick Motorsports driver told reporters via teleconference that “the only thing (people in the garage) want to talk to me about is driving the race cars.”

Previously, Martin had indicated he might be open to some kind of driver/owner arrangement like Tony Stewart’s that would allow Martin to gracefully transition out of the driver’s seat over a period of years.

But it sounds as if next year, Martin believes he’ll be focusing just on driving again.

“Sooner or later, maybe I’ll get a chance to do something else in the sport, as well,” he said. “I want to be a part of this sport for a long, long time, but they keep running at me about driving their stuff, so we’ll just wait and see what happens.”

Martin wouldn’t give any indication as to where he might be driving next year, except to say there’s interest.

“Something really, really fun and exciting is going to work out for me, something that will be very rewarding, and I’m in no hurry to force that to happen,” he said. “I’ll just wait until it sort of falls in my lap, just like the 5 car did. I wasn’t looking for a job when the 5 thing fell into my lap.
