Kyle Busch Gets Most Noise At Dover, But Kevin Harvick Hears More Cheers

With the way NASCAR fans react to Kyle Busch, this was somewhat predictable.

Busch received the most noise during driver introductions at Dover International Speedway, as measured by our handheld decibel meter – but only boos could be heard. Many fans apparently sided with Kevin Harvick in the drivers’ incident at Darlington Raceway, which ended with both on probation.

It seems that when Busch stays out of the spotlight for a few weeks, Dale Earnhardt Jr. gets the most noise when drivers are introduced to the crowd. But if Busch does anything controversial, he riles up the fans like no other driver.

Worth noting: The noise was quieter than other tracks because Dover has the drivers announce themselves to the crowd. This doesn’t make for much of a pre-race atmosphere, since many drivers just walk up to the microphone, flatly state their name and move on.

Here are the noise ratings this week, ranked in order of which driver’s crowd noise measured the most decibels:

Driver dB Type of Noise Explanation
1 Kyle Busch 83.3 Boos Dover fans apparently sided with Harvick
2 Jeff Gordon 81.4 Mix Sponsor DuPont's backyard
3 Dale Earnhardt Jr. 80.9 Cheers Fans a bit more subdued than usual
4 Mark Martin 80.2 Cheers He loves Dover; Dover fans love him
5 Kevin Harvick 79.9 Mostly cheers Apparently won PR battle with Kyle Busch
6 Tony Stewart 79.5 Cheers Was highlight of Stewart's miserable day
7 Denny Hamlin 78.6 Cheers Higher than normal
8 Jimmie Johnson 78.4 Boos Bizarrely low; sounded louder, but decibel meter disagreed
9 Martin Truex Jr. 78.3 Cheers Friendly fans at home track
10 Juan Pablo Montoya 78.1 Boos No love for JPM
