‘Planking’ Comes To NASCAR, As Champ Jimmie Johnson Gets On ‘Board’

“Planking” has become the latest social media craze, as it seems the Internet is suddenly flooded with people posting pictures of themselves lying face-down in a rigid position.

Some of these planking pictures are taken in unusual or risky settings, which makes the photos all the more interesting. They can be dangerous, though, as one man fell to his death last week in Australia in a plank attempt gone wrong.

During a rain delay on Wednesday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, many IndyCar drivers jumped on the planking bandwagon, as documented by SB Nation’s IndyCar blog, PopOffValve.com.

And the first driver to jump on the planking trend in NASCAR? Your five-time Sprint Cup Series champion, Jimmie Johnson, is on “board:”

Jimmie Johnson's photo: Plank NASCAR style. my head is killing me now...

After posting this picture, Johnson tweeted that “I wish I wore a helmet, my forehead is killing me.”

And it’s easy to see why. Johnson didn’t quite “plank” – his version is more of an angle – but it’s a good attempt nonetheless.

Expect other NASCAR drivers to follow the trend soon...maybe even as a post-victory celebration. The very funny @nascarcasm on Twitter put together this artist’s rendering of what a Regan Smith plank would have looked like after Darlington:
