NASCAR News: Greg Biffle Gets New Crew Chief As Matt Puccia Replaces Greg Erwin

As Greg Biffle continues to trail all three of his Roush Fenway Racing teammates in the win column this season, longtime crew chief Greg Erwin was ousted on Monday in favor of newcomer Matt Puccia.

Biffle, 14th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series standings and winless so far this season, has faltered in 2011 as teammates Carl Edwards (2nd), Matt Kenseth (6th) and David Ragan (15th) have all improved upon their performances from 2010.

So Erwin, despite leading Biffle’s No. 16 team to three straight appearances in the Chase, will be reassigned to another role within Roush Fenway Racing as Puccia climbs atop the pit box.

“I am excited for the opportunity to work with Matt Puccia,” Biffle said. “Greg Erwin led this team to the Chase the past three years and I look forward to Matt doing the same.”

Team owner Jack Roush said Puccia, who most recently led the team’s research and development program for superspeedways, was a “natural” choice to move up the ladder.

“I have every confidence that he will do well in this new role,” Roush said. “Greg Erwin has made a significant contribution to our engineering efforts and our program is better because of him.”

Puccia was Paul Menard’s Nationwide Series crew chief last year, leading the team to a fifth-place finish in the point standings.

Prior to that, he was a Truck Series crew chief for Erik Darnell and won the 2008 Michigan race as the head of Darnell’s team.
