Five of the 12 Chase drivers from 2010 have declined President Barack Obama’s invitation to attend a White House ceremony honoring them on Wednesday, citing “schedule conflicts.”
Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Burton Defend Decision To Meet With President Obama
On Friday, NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson – who has tweeted conservative political views in the past – and Jeff Burton – who could potentially run for the Senate as a Republican after he retires – both explained why they have chosen to attend.
From Johnson:
@jimmiejohnson: IMO... regardless of political views, when POTUS sends an invite and wants to honor you at the White House, you accept. #respect
And from Burton:
@RCR31JeffBurton: I've received some comments on next weeks White House trip. The presidency deserves respect and we are all Americans. I will be there!
