When a reporter asked Brad Keselowski on Friday why the driver waves an American flag after each of his race wins, Keselowski momentarily had a hard time finding the right words.
Why Does Brad Keselowski Fly An American Flag After Winning NASCAR Races?
It wasn’t because he didn’t know the answer to the question, he said, but rather because of what the flag meant to him personally.
NASCAR is a sport of excess and fame and fortune, and to Keselowski, the flag represents one of the main reasons why he and other drivers are able to enjoy their comfortable lifestyles.
“When I think of this sport, I think of a sport of decadence,” he said. “We’re not really producing anything but entertainment. I think of the people that make it possible for us to live this life and to do the things that we do.
“One of the first things that come to mind is the different causes, whether it’s the military and so forth. It’s more of a reflection as a whole of that and the rights that we have in this country to do things that are decadent.”
Keselowski’s flag-waving gesture isn’t just symbolic. According to the web site of the driver’s Checkered Flag Foundation, the charitable organization raises money “to support those who have sacrificed greatly for America, including military personnel, veterans, first-responders and their families.”
