Brad Keselowski won’t say much on NASCAR’s fine for in-car tweeting

On the eve of a potential championship weekend, the last thing Brad Keselowski wanted to do on Thursday was wade into the controversy about his penalty for tweeting inside the car at Phoenix.

NASCAR fined Keselowski $25,000 and placed him on probation for the rest of the year on Monday after it said electronic devices were not permitted in the car – a violation, since Keselowski tweeted during the red flag. But NASCAR did not fine him for his famous in-car picture at the Daytona 500 nor did officials take action after he tweeted during a red flag at Richmond in September.

“I’m confused a lot,” Keselowski said. “I’ll just add that to the list.”

Asked if NASCAR’s ruling was hypocritical, Keselowski said it doesn’t matter because the decision has already been made and there’s nothing he can do about it.

“It exists,” he said. “I have to work around it.”

Though he wouldn’t say definitively whether the phone would be out of the car on Sunday, Keselowski said he would “probably not” have it with him.

“I do feel naked when I don’t have my phone,” he said. “It’s my security blanket. But it doesn’t really matter how I feel about it. It is what it is at this point.”

NASCAR officials said this week drivers were warned in March not to use their phones in the car anymore, and the Phoenix race was the first time they had concrete evidence of a driver using a device since that time.

Asked if NASCAR had told him not to use his phone before Phoenix, Keselowski wouldn’t say.

“I’d rather stay out of that,” he said.

Keselowski also said it wouldn’t be possible for a cell phone to mess with a car’s electronic fuel injection system with the current technology.
