NASCAR At Fontana 2012 Starting Lineup: Denny Hamlin Leads Auto Club 400 Field

Toyota Racing Development flexed its muscle on Friday evening at Auto Club Speedway, with the Costa Mesa, Calif.-based engine builder grabbing six of the top 13 spots in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series qualifying at its home track.

Toyota swept the top three positions for Sunday’s Auto Club 400, with pole-sitter Denny Hamlin leading the way over Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Kyle Busch and Michael Waltrip Racing’s Mark Martin.

Joey Logano (eighth), Clint Bowyer (11th) and Martin Truex Jr. (13th) also had good qualifying runs in TRD-powered cars.

But Chevrolet had a strong showing as well. Chevy had five of the top 10 spots, including Kasey Kahne (fifth), Ryan Newman (sixth), Kevin Harvick (seventh), Tony Stewart (ninth) and Jimmie Johnson (10th).

No. 4 qualifier Greg Biffle was the only Ford in the top 10.

Robby Gordon, Joe Nemechek and Timmy Hill failed to qualify for Sunday’s race.
