2012 Indy 500: ESPN And ABC Will Use New Broadcast Technology

The 2012 Indianapolis 500 will be broadcast on ABC for the 48th straight year, but this year’s broadcast won’t be like any before it.

The ABC telecast will be produced by ESPN and feature more than 80 cameras, including onboard cameras in at least nine of the 33 cars. It’s not the first time we’ve seen onboard cameras, but thanks to ESPN’s “dual-path technology” the onboard cameras will provide even more this year. Each car is equipped with four cameras, but in previous years, only one signal could be transmitted at a time. With the new technology, two cameras can be shown at the same time, giving an entirely new view of the action.

In addition to the enhanced broadcast, the onboard camera feeds will also be streamed online via ESPN3. Viewers will be able to chose which driver’s onboard camera they want to watch on ESPN3. ESPN3, which is available at WatchESPN.com, will also have a replay of the 2012 Indy 500 after it concludes.
