Indy 500 2012: Will Power, Mike Conway Involved In Scary Crash

Airborne cars are something no one ever wants to see, but it was especially scary to see the replay of Mike Conway getting launched by Will Power in a lap 82 crash at the 2012 Indy 500 today.

Conway had spun around and hit the wall, which then collected Power. But Power’s car catapulted Conway into the air, and the No. 14 car rode the wall – with the driver’s head dangerously close to the fence – until it eventually dropped back onto the track.

Neither driver was hurt, but it was frightening considering this is the IZOD IndyCar Series’ first oval race since Dan Wheldon – last year’s Indy 500 champion – was killed in an October crash at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Another scary part of the crash was when a tire bounded down the track and barely missed the head of Helio Castroneves.

Everyone here is breathing a sigh of relief for now, but the race isn’t even halfway finished yet.

How did this all start? Well, Conway somehow came into the pits too close to the wall and took out two of his crew members.

After the race goes green, Marco Andretti – who has led most of the race – will be the leader, followed by Target Chip Ganassi Racing teammates Scott Dixon and Dario Franchitti.
