NASCAR tracks Texas and Charlotte bid for X Games

Stephen Dunn

Could the ESPN X Games be headed to a NASCAR track near you?

The answer may be yes if you live near Texas Motor Speedway or Charlotte Motor Speedway, as the two race tracks have submitted separate bids to host the popular action sports event beginning in 2014.

The two 1.5-mile ovals are owned by Speedway Motorsports Inc. and officials from TMS attended last year’s X Games in Los Angeles including track president Eddie Gossage.

“I attended every event at this past summer’s X Games in L.A., and it was one of the coolest events of my life,” Gossage said in a statement. “I’ve been fortunate enough to attend several Super Bowls, World Series, NBA Finals, Stanley Cup Finals, major bowl games and more. But the X Games was the most action-packed and over-the-top sports event I’ve ever experienced, and I know Texas Motor Speedway could be the perfect home for ESPN’s X Games.

“Every athlete is a bright, colorful character and I love that.”

Traditionally held over a four-day period with events ranging from skateboarding to motocross to rally car racing, the X Games attracts between 80,000 and 100,000 spectators.

The X Games has been contested in Los Angeles since 2005 and have previously been held in Philadelphia, San Francisco, San Diego and Providence and Newport (R.I.).

Other cities that have submitted bids for the four-day event include Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Houston and New Orleans.
