Jimmie Johnson will make a rare appearance in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, as he will take the wheel of the No. 5 Chevrolet fielded by Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his JR Motorsports team in next month’s race at Phoenix.

Great Clips will sponsor the effort in what will be Johnson’s first Nationwide since 2011 when he finished second at Watkins Glen in a JRM entry.

“I appreciate Junior letting me run one of his cars,” Johnson said in a statement released by the team. “My goal is to make my team owner so proud that, perhaps, he’ll invite me back more often than once every two years.”

It had been previously announced that Kasey Kahne and Brad Sweet would split time in the No. 5 car this season, with Sweet making the majority of starts.

Johnson has started 92 Nationwide races in his career with his lone series victory coming in 2001 at Chicagoland Speedway.
