Snowball Derby 2013: Wilson contends but comes up short

Veteran Donnie Wilson once again showed some muscle in a prestigious short track race, but faded near the end of the Snowball Derby.

PENSACOLA, Fla. -- For the second straight major Super Late Model race, Oklahoma’s Donnie Wilson found himself in prime position to contend for the win approaching the closing stages. Unfortunately, some circumstances kept him from having the finish he wanted.

“I followed Chase (Elliott) to put two right (side tires) on, got out of the pits right (behind Elliott), and the thing pushed like a dump truck. I don’t know why it did what it did,” explained Wilson.

Wilson fought with the handling of the car most of the week leading up to the Derby, and was forced to take a provisional due to a disappointing qualifying effort. Despite having to pit to repair some damage in the middle of the race, he was one of the few that was able to move through the field and make passes with ease.

“I was getting under (Grant) Enfinger and he hit me and knocked the toe out,” said Wilson. “During the caution, I came back in and put two right sides on. The car would come back up through there.”

While the season has been a struggle, Wilson could still manage a smile knowing the strong cars he has been able to drive.

“That’s been about my year,” laughed Wilson. “I’m really pleased about how the car ran, we just aren’t getting the finishes.”

Wilson will be back with the Southern Super Series in 2014, and will certainly continue to search for that elusive major Super Late Model victory.
