But starting this season, the DuPont name will no longer be associated with Gordon. Instead, fans will see Axalta Coating Systems in its place, after parent company, The Carlyle Group, acquired DuPont’s auto paint business last year for a sum of $5 billion.
Axalta will sponsor Gordon in 14 races this season with its first event being the April 13 race at Texas Motor Speedway. AARP’s “Drive To End Hunger” campaign will continue its role of primary sponsor in the remaining 22 races.
“While these are big changes for us, our commitment to the No. 24 team, Jeff Gordon and NASCAR remains the same,” Axalta President John McCool said in a statement. “We are proud to continue our sponsorship of the No. 24 team and Jeff Gordon in 2013.”
The last time Gordon raced with Dupont as his primary sponsor was last November at Homestead-Miami Speedway, where the two celebrated their 20th anniversary together with a special commemorative paint scheme.
Fittingly, Gordon won the race -- the 87th of his career and the 84th time he’s done so in a car with DuPont sponsorship.
“These are the same folks who have spent more than two decades executing one of the most successful sponsorship programs in sports,” team owner Rick Hendrick said. “They understand the value of NASCAR, and we’ve already had positive conversations about the future. It’s been an incredible partnership that we look forward to building on even more.”
