The Southern Super Series has announced that the Augie Grill fuel penalty from the June 21st event at Pensacola Five Flags Speedway has been upheld and that the similar penalty levied against Chris Davidson on June 22nd at Mobile International Speedway has been rescinded and dismissed.
Southern Super Series upholds Augie Grill penalty, reverses Chris Davidson infraction
Southern Super Series Late Model Tour officials sent the disqualified fuel samples from the Augie Grill and Chris Davidson cars, from the most recent Gulf Coast weekend, to Sunoco technicians and the results were announced Friday.
The decisions were announced on Friday following the laboratory inspection of both fuel samples by Sunoco technicians.
Head technical inspector Ricky Brooks and his staff found traces of an unapproved fuel substance in both cars during the Gulf Coast events at both Pensacola and Mobile respectively. Augie Grill failed inspection after winning the race on June 21st and was immediately disqualified.
As the title sponsor of the Southern Super Series, Sunoco requested that only their purple blend be used in the tour and both Grill and Davidson had traces of another brand in their fuel cells. However, Southern Super Series officials sent both team’s fuel samples to Sunoco labs to be tested and the results showed that while Davidson’s fuel was from another brand -- it was within Series spec.
However, Sunoco chemists found that the Augie Grill fuel sample was both a different brand and an unapproved blend.

The fuel infraction that resulted in the disqualification of Chris Davidson at the June 22 Series event at Mobile International Speedway has been reversed, according to SSS Technical Director Ricky Brooks.
“As promised, we sent fuel samples direct to Sunoco laboratories following the Gulf Coast weekend in June,” stated Brooks. “The findings of those tests revealed that Chris Davidson’s fuel, though tainted with non-Sunoco branded gas, was actually within spec.”
Brooks also offered that Sunoco chemists found Augie Grill’s fuel sample to be an unapproved blend.
Davidson will now be credited with a third-place finish (from Mobile) and will receive the points earned during that event.
The next Southern Super Series event will be another Gulf Coast doubleheader on July 26 and July 27 at Five Flags Speedway and Mobile International Speedway. The most recent event, the World Crown 300 at Gresham Motorsports Park in Jefferson, Ga. was rained out and has been rescheduled for Aug. 10.
