NASCAR comes to one of racing’s most celebrated tracks for the Super Weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, with Jimmie Johnson seeking both his fifth win of the 2013 Sprint Cup Series season and his fifth win at the Brickyard.

Jimmie Johnson’s been the best racer on the Sprint Cup Series this year, and he’s been the best racer in the Brickyard 400, NASCAR’s big race at one of racing’s biggest tracks.

Johnson’s on top in the Sprint Cup standings and the most consistent racer in NASCAR events in Indy. He’s won four of the last seven races there, including last year’s event, and after winning less than three weeks ago at Daytona, he could become the all-time leader in NASCAR’s race at the Brickyard. Jeff Gordon’s taken the race four times as well, but he hasn’t won since 2004 and is still seeking his first win of the year.
Qualifying results don’t seem to have as big a role in who wins at Indy as elsewhere: only twice in 19 runnings of the Brickyard 400 has the pole winner taken the checkered flag, with eight winners coming from outside the top 10.
This week’s race is named after Samuel Deeds as part of Crown Royal’s “Your Hero’s Name Here” initiative. Deeds, a Marine Corps gunnery sergeant who underwent more than 30 surgeries and procedures after being wounded by an IED in Iraq, recovered from his injuries and saved three swimmers caught in a rip tide in North Carolina.
Sharing the weekend with the Sprint Cup Series are the Nationwide Series, whose Indiana 250 is being held Saturday evening, and the Grand-Am series, which will hold its Brickyard Grand Prix on the infield road course at Indy.
