The Southern Super Series event scheduled for Sept. 7 at Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville has been cancelled according to sources within the speedway and a new release on the series website.
Fairground Speedway Nashville cancels September Southern Super Series event
The penultimate Southern Super Series event of the season slated for Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville on Sept. 7 has been cancelled.
In a letter posted on the Southern Super Series website, Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville promoter Tony Formosa says that the track will be unable to host the event, which was scheduled to run alongside the traditional Tennessee State Fair.
“After ten days of contract negotiations with the Tennessee State Fair Association, we have been unable to reach an acceptable agreement regarding the percentage of gate and concession fees from the association for this event,” said Formosa in the letter.
“By contract the State Fair Association’s lease controls the entire Fairgrounds & Expo Center property including the Speedway during their annual event. It is unfortunate we were not able to come to an agreement, but rest assured every effort was made to do so.”
The event was just added to the Southern Super Series schedule last month when rain postponed the World Crown 300 at Gresham Motorsports Park. The World Crown was moved to Gresham’s only remaining scheduled Southern Super Series date on Aug. 10 and Nashville agreed to add that race to their own schedule.
With the cancellation, the Southern Super Series has now been forced to cancel two of their races in just over a week with Series officials also announcing that the rained out July 27 race at Mobile International Speedway will also not be made up.
“We tried diligently to find an acceptable date to re-schedule the (Mobile) event,” Series Director Dan Spence said. “But with other marquee events coming up soon, we just couldn’t make it work.
“The only dates that worked for the Series were the first two weekends in October but the first weekend conflicted with a major annual event in Mobile, and the second weekend conflicted with the Winchester 400, and that would go against the very philosophy for which the Southern Super Series was founded”.
The next two events for the Southern Super Series will be the World Crown 300 at Gresham Motorsports Park on Saturday night, followed by the Alabama 200 at Montgomery Motor Speedway on August 24. After two more races at Pensacola and Mobile, the inagural Super Series season will conclude with the All-American 400 in Nashville on November 2.
The first-ever Series champion will be recognized at the prestigious Snowball Derby on December 8.
