NASCAR at Michigan International Speedway 2016: Lineup, starting grid for FireKeepers Casino 400

Joey Logano will start on pole for the FireKeepers Casino 400 on Sunday.

Joey Logano took his second pole of the season and will look to capture Sunday’s FireKeepers Casino 400 from the top position. The race will be held at Michigan International Speedway, where Logano’s lap speed was 199.557 mph to give him the pole. He finished second place in qualifying his last two times out, at Charlotte Motor Speedway and Pocono Raceway.

Sunday’s race should be plenty exciting, with a new aero package guaranteeing high speeds, low downforce and cars that are toeing a line between “awesomely fast” and “completely out of control.” From afar, it might seem blatantly unsafe, but the drivers are happy to have the extra power at their fingertips.

It’s the kind of change that may ultimately lead to the more talented drivers standing out from the pack. The new package features a much smaller spoiler, which has taken away a lot of the downforce.

Trailing Logano is Martin Truex Jr. with a speed of 199.016 mph and Tony Stewart with a speed of 198.950 mph. For Stewart, it’s his best start to a race this season. Denny Hamlin, Ryan Blaney, Ryan Newman, Kyle Larson, Austin Dillon, Kyle Busch and Chase Elliott round out the top 10 of the grid.

Kurt Busch, the defending race-winner at Michigan and winner of last week’s race at Pocono, qualified back in 17th place. Kevin Harvick was hampered by a pair of cautions early on in the session and was unable to set a time. When he finally did manage to set one, his tires were fairly worn and he wound up in 29th.

All 40 drivers who entered qualifying set a time and will race on Sunday. Below is the full lineup and starting grid for Sunday’s race, which is set for 1 p.m. ET and will be broadcast by Fox Sports 1.
