The FireKeepers Casino 400 is set for Sunday at Michigan International Speedway, and Joey Logano is sitting pole for just the second time this season. Logano’s lap speed of 199.557 mph was enough to give him the pole, a welcome relief after he finished in second place in qualifying the past two races.

The FireKeepers Casino 400 is set for Sunday, with Joey Logano sitting on pole.
Logano has eight top 10 finishes and three top fives at Michigan, and managed to win it back in 2013. His average finish is just 13.3, so this isn’t his best track by any stretch of the mind, but he’s done well in the past. He hasn’t managed to win a race this Sprint Cup season, but he’s feeling good about the cars and the new aero package instituted by NASCAR.
“These cars, they are out of control,” Logano said. “It is a lot of fun. You go down to the corners at 200-something and it feels really fast. You get to the corner and you have your hands full trying to figure out what you are going to do. It is a fun challenge for the drivers.”
The new aero includes a much smaller spoiler that reduces downforce and increases speed. It also makes the cars a lot harder to handle, but Logano is apparently fine with that and thinks it will serve him well as he searches for his first win of the season.
Martin Truex Jr. and Tony Stewart rounded out the top three in qualifying, with Stewart’s third spot being a season best for him. Denny Hamlin, Ryan Blaney, Ryan Newman, Kyle Larson, Austin Dillon, Kyle Busch and Chase Elliott rounded out the top 10 of the grid.
Busch came out on top in Pocono on Monday.
Brad Keselowski, who ranks second on the Chase Grid, will be racing his home race at Michigan. He has never won on the track despite it being his home race and he’ll be trying for the win on Sunday.
“We’ve had a lot of good runs at Michigan and opportunities to win races where we’ve just fallen a little bit short,” Keselowski said. “I think we need just a little more speed and I need to execute at just a tiny high level, and we can win there.”
Keselowski, who owns two wins, five top fives and nine top 10s this season already, will start 15th in the grid. He finished third at Pocono last week.
Sunday’s race is set for 1 p.m. ET, with coverage being provided by Fox Sports 1. Their pre-race coverage begins bright and early at 11:30 a.m. The race has an approximate green flag time of 1:18 p.m., according to Jayski.com.
