The NBA Draft Is Moving To Newark, New Jersey: Seriously?

According to a report from the Newark Star-Ledger, David Stern will make the announcement tonight. The NBA Draft is headed to Jersey:

↵↵The NBA Draft, the showcase event on the league’s offseason calendar, will be held at the Prudential Center in Newark on June 23, 2011, according to two people with knowledge of the decision.

↵↵

I understand that the NBA has a vested interest in Newark—because the Nets will be playing there while they await completion of their Brooklyn arena—but why do they have to ruin the draft experience for dozens of wide-eyed teenagers? The NBA Draft is supposed to be the best night of a young player's life. The day when all the work comes together and the dream comes true, and the night that gets whiled away drinking Appletinis with Jay-Z and DJ Clue at the 40/40 Club.

↵“DRAFT PARTY, Y’ALL. WE MADE IT.”

↵But let just say this: Nobody has ever traveled to Newark, New Jersey and said, “We made it.”

↵Ever. I know it’s just outside New York City, but why risk ruining the mood? Put the draft in South Beach, put it in L.A.. Maybe Las Vegas. Or even D.C. But Newark? Even the D-League draft deserves better than Newark. Step your game up, Commissioner Stern.
