During a timeout late in the first quarter, Flip Saunders asked his team what they were missing, and they answered with a resounding half-hearted "rebounds!" They are also missing discriminating shot selection, as is evident in their 14-43 shooting. On a less dismal note, Wall, in his regular season debut, may not be running away with the game, but he’s running, and fast. His ability to get to the rim before anyone else knows he’s got the ball is going to come in handy for the future, if not in this particular game. Strangely enough, Washington’s top scorers are Al Thornton and JaVale McGee, both with 7.
Wizards Vs. Magic: Like The Varsity Team Is Scrimmaging the JV
Orlando, on the other hand, is seeing some quality play out of Vince Carter, Dwight Howard and Rashard Lewis. In fact, all of their starters contributed points in the 1st quarter. They’re making the Wizards interior defense look nonexistent, running layup and dunk drills like it’s their job. Which it is. They’re also violently out-rebounding the Wizards, 26-11, which is leading to many more offensive opportunities. Add to that much better shot selection, and you have the recipe for victory. Or disaster, depending on who you root for.
The story of the night? The Wizards are shooting 32.6 percent, and the Magic are shooting 66.7 percent. How do you even begin to defend that?
