Professional basketball, like any of many secret societies with gatherings that are supposed to be private, apparently has a "What happens here, stays here" code with regards to what is said on the court. So it falls to ESPN's Jeff Van Gundy, guardian of this code, to mete out blame to Charlie Villanueva for revealing on Twitter that Kevin Garnett called him a "cancer patient."
Charlie Villanueva ‘Crossed The Line’ By Revealing Kevin Garnett’s Remarks, Says Jeff Van Gundy
Van Gundy took to the radio to slam Villanueva.
“Let me start with Charlie Villanueva. He crossed the line by tweeting it. He had a chance to do something about it during the game. Go to it. If you were that offended, and it is offensive if it was said, go to it right there.“Relax. It’s not like Van Gundy was suggesting Villanueva and Garnett should actually fight over a quip, right? Right?!
“You don’t have to punch. But you can cross him right there and let everybody know that you have a problem with it right there.“Van Gundy’s point is well-taken: there are ways to head off ugly disclosures of the ugly things NBA players sometimes say on the the court, and Villanueva’s means of dealing with Garnett’s comments made it a bigger, uglier PR problem. But is there no middle ground between an on-court confrontation and a barb sent via Twitter for Blackberry? Did all of the NBA’s locker rooms get new moats of lava?
And, more importantly, who appointed Jeff Van Gundy arbiter of all things trash talk and/or fighting? We all know what happens when JVG ends up in a fight.
