George Karl Now Has 1,000 Career Wins After Nuggets’ Win Over Raptors

On Friday night, Denver Nuggets head coach George Karl joined some very exclusive company. When the buzzer sounded to put the win over the Raptors in the books, Karl officially had his 1,000th career win as an NBA head coach.

Karl joins Don Nelson, Lenny Wilkens, Pat Riley, Jerry Sloan, Phil Jackson, and Larry Brown in the 1,000-win club. His winning percentage sits at .595 for his career with the then-Seattle Sonics and Nuggets, and this season he's led Denver to a competitive 14-8 record.

↵Recently, however, Karl has perhaps been best-known for his fight against cancer. In February, Karl announced that he was battling cancer of the neck and throat, but he saw outstanding improvement in his condition, and was able to return in time to coach the opening game of the Nuggets’ 2010-11 season.

↵Our Nuggets blog, Denver Stiffs, had the chance to talk with Karl this week about the prospect of reaching 1,000 wins. It’s a good read, so be sure to check it out.
