LeBron James made headlines (what else is new) when he discussed his thoughts on the state of the NBA. If it were up to him, things would be like they were in the 80's when every team had multiple stars and the league wasn't so bloated with franchises. In other words, he'd like to see some contraction.
LeBron Learns The Definition Of Contraction After Implicitly Encouraging Contraction
James even cited a specific example of how the league could contract in his argument:
"Imagine if you could take Kevin Love off Minnesota and add him to another team and you shrink the [league]. Looking at some of the teams that aren't that great, you take Brook Lopez or you take Devin Harris off these teams that aren't that good right now and you add him to a team that could be really good. Not saying let's take New Jersey and let's take Minnesota out of the league. But hey, you guys are not stupid, I'm not stupid, it would be great for the league."
Spoken like someone who really understands the definition of contraction.
LeBron responded to the comments and the mini-furor they caused by explaining that, in fact, he has no idea what the definition of contraction is.
"That's crazy, because I had no idea what the word 'contraction' meant before I saw it on the Internet," James said after the Miami Heat's practice Monday. "I never even mentioned that. That word never even came out of my mouth. I was just saying how the league was back in the '80s and how it could be good again. I never said, 'Let's take some of the teams out.' "
Spoken like a well-media-trained pro. He’s right on all accounts. He never used the word contraction and he never specifically said the league should remove teams. He merely “implied” all of that. BIG difference, you guys.
Once again, we’re left with the realization that LeBron James is not wrong. We just never truly understand everything he does or says. It is, and forever will be, our bad.
