Carmelo Anthony: ‘I Would Never Go About It The Way LeBron Did’

As the rumors continue to swirl around Carmelo Anthony and the trade that still hasn’t happened, you’re not crazy if this all feels a little familiar. You know the feeling. The one where, if you see another rumor-mongering story about this, you might just slam your laptop into the ground and swear off the internet for good. That’s right, we’re talking about Def Con LeBron.

That’s where we are with Carmelo Anthony, right?

Maybe. But in case you were wondering, as he tells Sports Illustrated this week, ‘Melo never to emulate LeBron:

“I would never go about it the way LeBron did it. If he could do it all over again, he wouldn’t do it that way -- he would do it a totally different way, I can guarantee you that.”

Hmm.

On the one hand... it’s refreshing to hear that LeBron’s buddies have taken note of how disastrous his Free Agency World Tour turned out to be. Even if we’re still waiting for the official mea culpa from LeBron, himself, it’s a good sign that someone like Carmelo feels comfortable enough to come right out and say, “That was stupid, I would never do that.”

On the other hand... By using back channels to make it clear to Denver’s front office that he’s leaving this summer and he’d like to be traded, Carmelo has forced the Nuggets to shop him all season long (or risk losing him for nothing), and the end result is a media frenzy that’s been on par with anything we saw from LeBron in 2010. It’s arguably worse.

Instead of LeBron’s spectacular explosion of obnoxiousness (cresting with The Decision™), Carmelo’s ongoing trade saga has created a slow trickle of nausea-inducing speculation that’s been flowing steadily since August. All centered on a player not half as good as LeBron.

I’m not saying it’s all Carmelo’s fault, but for anyone keeping score at home, this isn’t that different from The Decision™. It’s just a dull, white noise that’s driving us insane instead LeBron’s ear-splitting air horn. And on that note, who’s excited for LeBron’s new Nike cartoon series?!
