VIDEO: LeBron James Introduces ‘The LeBrons’ Animated Series
I've long believed the decline of LeBron James' golden-boy image began when Nike stopped doing "The LeBrons." Sure, those commercials were overplayed, but they actually showed some personality, something LeBron tends to be incapable of doing in any other setting. Now, we know it's official that they are returning, this time in animated form.
The series of videos will apparently try to teach children the importance of “family, teamwork, friendship, giving back to the community, staying in school, staying out of trouble, and more,” which may strike some as ironic considering the way “The Decision” went down. It is, of course, and it’s surely as much of a branding thing as a humanitarian endeavor, but for once, let’s save the snark. Why get on him for trying to use “The LeBrons” for something good?
Sure, there’s a lot of typical LeBron James behavior in this video. He speaks in a monotone, as if he is not human. He thinks that kids will be able to relate to his four personalities, as if they know exactly what it’s like to be filthy rich, amazing at basketball and with no need to worry about much else, and then follows it by saying that “not just kids, but everyone” can relate to him. And, of course, there’s the whole hypocrisy with “The Decision” and all the other things he’s done over the past year.
But at the same time, what does everyone expect? He’s introducing a cartoon show about himself. People make mistakes, and that doesn’t mean they should never give advice to others on how to handle situations differently. For once, maybe we should let LeBron be.
Plus, let’s be honest: “The LeBrons” were actually kind of cool.
