VIDEO: Blake Griffin Grounded By Brendan Haywood, NBA’s New Supervillain

So you want to become a NBA supervillain? You have two paths: broadcast a one-hour show during which you betray a city that has supported you for seven year, or take down Blake Griffin with a mid-air flagrant foul. Choose wisely.

Brendan Haywood of the Dallas Mavericks chose the latter. He yanked Griffin out of orbit in the third quarter of the Clippers' eventual loss, sending the superlative rookie to the bench for a spell.

Haywood claims he didn’t deserve a flagrant -- “No, that’s not a flagrant foul. I feel the NBA should give my money back for that one” -- and I can see his point. Blake plays with such abandon that episodes like this will happen. A defender will hook his arm during flight, and the landing will be ugly. That’s why everyone fears the worst for high-flyers like Griffin: gravity will get you in the end. Always.

That said, this is Blake Griffin, a national treasure and interplanetary source of pride. When the extraterrestrials arrive, we will show them Blake Griffin, and they will put down their rail guns. We absolutely cannot risk losing him to an elbow injury or worse caused by Brendan Haywood.

So forget about flagrants. Haywood should be suspended for the rest of the season. No touching the the valuables!
