Kevin Garnett has a reputation not only as one of his generation's very best players, but also as a bit of a cheap shot artist. Some even believe him a "punk" -- willing to make the first blow in a scuffle, but unwilling to stand in and back it up. He also once got on all fours and barked at Jerryd Bayless. He's pretty intense.
VIDEO: Kevin Garnett Punches Channing Frye In The Gems, Proclaims Innocence
On Friday, he added a line to his anti-resumé by punching Channing Frye in the crotch after undercutting the Sun on the three-point attempt. Ben Golliver of SB Nation's Blazersedge captured the video of the dirty hit and Frye's resultant displeasure.
Low blows aren't new to the NBA (ask Chris Kaman), but they typically don't happen in plain sight, outside a paint skirmish. Garnett had to know cameras would catch his swing if Garnett caught Frye's sensitive parts. Of course, KG doesn't care at all how he's seen. He's got a touch of lunacy in him. He's a mad man, and he cares about nothing more than he cares about winning. Image? Punishment? Be damned.
It’s unclear whether the league will sanction something like this beyond the in-game ejection. NBA officials will at least look at the play, but given that Shawne and Marvin Williams actually threw haymakers at each other on Friday night, this may take a lower priority. An ejection during the game seems to cover the league’s bases.
Meanwhile, Frye seems to be taking it all in stride. While the Suns' big man was showered after the game, a teammate hung a pair of boxing gloves in Frye's locker, reports SB Nation Arizona's Seth Pollack.
