Well the lockout’s in full swing and the finish line’s nowhere in sight, but there’s good news! All that means is that it’s time for NBA superstars to start kicking contingency plans into action. Like Amar’e Stoudemire, who’s apparently pitching a sitcom to various networks.
#LockoutLife: Amar’e, Baron Davis, And New (Wingstop) Franchises
From The Hollywood Reporter:
Earlier in October, New York Knicks star Amare Stoudemire pitched to a handful of major networks a half-hour scripted comedy that he is developing with producers Jeff Kwatinetz and Happy Walters, who is Stoudemire’s agent and president of Rogue Sports, Relativity Media’s sports business.
But not to be outdone... Baron Davis has some entertainment plans of his own.
B. Diddy, you’ll remember, has a history here. He and Steve Nash starred in a spectacular spoof of Step Brothers a few years back, and he also co-founded a production company that produced a documentary on gang culture called, Crips and Bloods: Made in America. So, what’s next?
From the downfall of American inner cities to the downfall of the American pocket square...
Davis is spending the lockout focusing on producing the documentary American Schlub, which explores the downfall of men’s style, and starring in a pilot for a variety show.
Admit it though: You’d watch Baron Davis lecture you about fashion for 90 minutes. I would, anyway. As for the variety show, he’s sorta already performing. Adding a camera seems like a no-brainer.
But the best #LockoutLife entry for today comes from a press release we got recently.
NBA Forward Drew Gooden Signs with Wingstop
Gooden to bring award-winning hot wing chain to Orlando
RICHARDSON, Texas – The lockout may have stalled the NBA season, but things are still heating up for Milwaukee Bucks forward Drew Gooden. Gooden has signed a multi-unit franchise agreement with national hot wing chain Wingstop to open four restaurants in Orlando over the next few years.
With the lockout, a lot of us are thinking about our futures and looking for new business and investment opportunities," said Gooden. "I’ve been a big fan of Wingstop for years, so this is a perfect fit for me."
"Drew Gooden and Wingstop are a winning combination," said Dave Vernon, vice president of franchise sales for the company. "Drew has shown great enthusiasm for the brand and a strong head for business throughout the franchise process. He also brought on a strong operational partner in George Taylor III, which will help ensure his success in Orlando."
With a sole focus on cooked-to-order chicken, the Wingstop menu features traditional and boneless wings, strips and the chain’s newest offering – Glider sandwiches – all sauced and tossed in nine original flavors including Lemon Pepper and Garlic Parmesan. Homemade side dishes include fresh-cut fries with proprietary seasoning, Bourbon baked beans and potato salad.
"I fell in love with the people and the city when I played for the Orlando Magic, so I decided to make Orlando home," added Gooden. "There’s a huge market of wing eaters in Orlando and I just want to provide them with the best product out there, hands down."
...And now I need to go find some wings.
