Cuttino Mobley has sued the New York Knicks, claiming that the team "forced and pressured" the guard to retire after acquiring him via trade in 2008, reports Alan Hahn of Newsday. After Mobley was traded to the Knicks, medical tests showed that the guard suffered from worsening hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Weeks later, Mobley retired. As a result, the Knicks shed Zach Randolph's (then-)onerous contract and were able to drop Mobley's $9.5 million salary from the team's luxury tax bill in 2009-10.

In a statement given to Hahn, the Knicks refuted Mobley’s claims, citing the guard’s own comments given during his farewell address in December 2008 that retirement was the only option.
This isn't the first time in recent years a player has claimed his team pressured him to medically retire. The Portland Trail Blazers sought a medical retirement for Darius Miles in 2008, but the forward, who had double microfracture surgery, re-entered the NBA with the Memphis Grizzlies less than a year after the retirement. As a result, the Blazers didn't get the $9 million in cap space they had thought they were getting with Miles' retirement.
