Jeff Green To Undergo Heart Surgery, Will Miss Celtics’ 2011-12 Season

Jeff Green will miss the 2011-12 season after an aortic aneurysm was discovered during his team physical, the Boston Celtics announced Saturday. He will undergo heart surgery on Jan. 9. Green signed a one-year deal with the Celtics as a free agent earlier in December. Because he could not pass his physical, that contract will be voided, according to the Boston Herald.

This comes as devastating news to a 25-year-old player looking to play an expanded role for the Celtics this season. Green joined Boston in a midseason trade that sent Kendrick Perkins and Nate Robinson to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Though Green struggled somewhat with his new team, averaging 9.8 points and 3.3 rebounds just over 23 minutes per night, the Celtics thought enough of him to take him on again as an unrestricted free agent.

With Green out, Boston's front court takes a big hit from a depth standpoint. Sasha Pavlovic would currently be the first man on the court behind Paul Pierce if the Celtics don't try to address Green's absence in free agency.
