Paul Pierce Injury Could Keep Boston Celtics’ Star Out Of Season Opener Vs. New York Knicks

The Boston Celtics could be without Paul Pierce when they open up against the New York Knicks on Sunday. Pierce has been suffering from a heel injury.

The Boston Celtics are not a deep team as is, and they may need to open their 2011-12 season without one of their main guys. Paul Pierce sat out practice on Tuesday with a heel injury, and Doc Rivers said there's a chance Pierce will miss the team's season opener against the New York Knicks on Christmas Day. Via WEEI's Paul Flannery:

Paul Pierce won’t play tomorrow and Doc Rivers said he is concerned that Pierce may not be available for the regular season opener.

Pierce will not play in the Celtics' final preseason game on Wednesday against the Toronto Raptors at home. Rivers said he doesn't think Pierce's injury is a serious long-term issue, but it is a concern in the short term.

The Celtics are very thin behind Pierce, with only Marquis Daniels and Sasha Pavlovic in reserve. One of those two would likely start if Pierce cannot play on Sunday.
