Paul Pierce is doubtful for the Boston Celtics' game against the New York Knicks on Christmas Day, according to head coach Doc Rivers. Pierce has been dealing with a heel injury throughout the preseason. Rivers said that he does not expect the veteran forward to play in the team's season opener.

“I think [Saturday], we’ll know better,” Rivers said. “Paul may wake up and say, ‘Coach, I wanna go.’ I can tell you this, it’s very unlikely he’ll start if he plays. I don’t think that’ll happen. If he does play, he’ll play 15 to 20 minutes but right now, I don’t see him playing.”
Rivers added that Sasha Pavlovic would likely start in place of Pierce, as he did Wednesday day in a preseason game against the Toronto Raptors. Marquis Daniels should also see minutes.
