VIDEO: Gilbert Arenas Was Out Of Bounds During Dwight Howard Alley Oop

When Gilbert Arenas and Dwight Howard connected for a buzzer-beating alley oop to close the third quarter against the Los Angeles Lakers, the game's momentum swung even further in favor of the Orlando Magic. Arenas lost his dribble, backpedaled near the sideline, and hurled the ball in the direction of the hoop, where Howard gobbled it up like he had just about every other shot that afternoon.

But if you look closely, you can see Arenas was actually out of bounds with the ball before releasing:

Due to a silly NBA rule, whether a ball carrier’s out-of-boundsedness can be reviewed depends on whether he’s attempting a shot or not. Since Arenas was technically passing the ball, the only thing that was up for review was the question of if Howard beat the shot clock.

Those two points didn’t matter in this game, but in a different situation they could have. And if you can count on anybody to find that situation, it’s Gilbert Arenas.
